The introduction of large gas phase volumes into the polymer alters the physical characteristics of the material volume weight, permeability to fluids and gases, and physico-mechanical properties. Moreover, the properties of the polymer matrix itself are changed (owing to orientation effects, supermolecular structure of the polymer in the walls, ribs and tension bars of cells), which drives up the value of specific strength on impact, and results in anisotropy of elasticity. [Pg.100]

Figure 12. Epifluorescence (fluorescent probe, 23) photomicrograph of a mono-molecular film of the phospholipid dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl choline (10, R = R = n-CisHsi) at the air-water interface. The black regions are composed of solid-phase lipid, and the white (fluorescent) regions are fluid-phase lipid containing about 1 mol% of a fluorescent lipid probe. (Top) Micrograph showing the onset of solid phase formation bar, 50 pm. Middle) Micrograph showing formation of chiral solid domains when the phospholipid is one of the enantiomeric forms (R) bar, 50 pm. Bottom) Micrograph showing spiral forms of enantiomeric lipid when 2 mol% of cholesterol is included in the monolayer so as to reduce the line tension bar, 30 pm. Reproduced from ref. 146 (McConnell and Keller, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 1987, 84,4706) with permission of the Academy of Sciences of the USA. Figure 12. The tension bar at the pin connection should be designed to be stronger than the pin. [Pg.288]

One can easily see the lobes of the electron clouds that look like bridge-like tension bars along the directions of [111] type. [Pg.204]

Two bars are curtailed near the support. Tension bars shall be anchored over the support. [Pg.613]

The cone and plate viscometer can be used for oscillatory shear measurements as well. In this case, the sample is deformed by an oscillatory driver which may be mechanical or electromagnetic. The amplitude of the sinusoidal deformation is measured by a strain transducer. The force deforming the sample is measured by the small deformation of a relatively rigid spring or tension bar to which is attached a stress transducer. On account of the energy dissipated by the viscoelastic polymer system, a phase difference develops between the stress and the strain. The complex viscosity behavior is determined from the amplitudes of stress and strain and the phase angle between them. The results are usually interpreted in terms of the material functions, p, G, G" and others [33-40]. [Pg.60]

The conveying action can induce a large axial thrust towards the end of the bowl opposite to the beach. On the larger horizontal decanters. Alfa Laval employs a tension bar on the conveyor to counterbalance this thrust and take off the load that could be placed on the front bowl hub. The tension bar consists of a substantial hollow bar bolted to the rear face of the conveyor. It projects through the spindle of the rear hub and is locked in position with a large nut outboard of the spindle. The hollow centre affords access for the feed tube. [Pg.65]
