Several transition metals such as V, Nb, Ta, and Pd can form stable bulk hydrides, so-called interstitial hydrides the bonding in the hydride phase is not ionic but mostly metallic in character, and the hydrogen to metal ratio is not necessarily stoichiometric. Especially, nanoparticles of noble metals such as Pd are relatively easy to prepare by various methods, such as vapor phase deposition on substrates, reductions of salts in solution (electrochemically or electroless), and the inverse micelle templated growth. They are not easily oxidized, and, in recent years, several methods have been developed to precisely control the size of the particles or clusters. Furthermore, growth in solution in the presence of surfactants and stabilizers allows control over the shape of the final particles [35, 36, 42]. [Pg.293]

In this chapter we provide a brief review of different nanolithography and nanomanipulation techniques. We discuss mainly such techniques as templated growth, dip pen lithography, anodic oxidation and scanning probe microscope based nanomanipulation. The chapter contains an introduction to the basic techniques followed by examples of such nanostructure growth. [Pg.688]

So far, we only considered the formation of monolayers. However, monolayers could prove to be ideal platforms to direct the templated growth into the third dimension from 2D crystal engineering to templated growth in 3D. Ex-... [Pg.124]

Templated growth of materials like BaTiOs presents an attractive route to producing a textured ceramic. Templated grain growth of alumina was discussed above. The principle involved here is the use of a seed to initiate exaggerated grain growth. [Pg.441]

Thus far, only metal oxide nanotubes have been synthesized by the hydrothermal templated growth. Whereas crystalline nanotubes were obtained from 2D (layered) oxides, various 3D oxide compounds resulted in semicrystalline or amorphous nanotubes only [63]. This kind of process could be extended to the synthesis of nanotubes from chalcogenide and halide compounds in the future. [Pg.251]

One of the earliest and most aaively pursued areas in which viral capsids have been used for materials synthesis is the templated growth of inorganic nanostmctures. Their monodisperse sizes, well-defined shapes, and tolerance to a range of conditions make capsids particularly attractive for depositing... [Pg.249]
