Formyl-3-thienyl Methyl Tellurium (Organo Lithium Method) A mixture of 55 mmol of butyl lithium and 7.8 g (50 mmol) of 4-formylthiophcnc ethylene acetal in diethyl ether is cooled at — 78° for 20 min. A solution of 14.5 g (50 mmol) of dimethyl ditellurium in diethyl ether is added dropwise until the orange color of the ditellurium persists in the mixture. The mixture is allowed to warm to 20° and is then poured onto ice/water. The product is extracted with diethyl ether, the extract is dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered, the solvent is distilled from the filtrate and the residue is distilled under vacuum yield 6.3 g (50%) b.p. 120°/0.8 torr m.p. 55°. 

The structural chemistry of some metal dithiocarbamates, i.e. systematics, coordination modes, crystal packing, and supramolecular self-assembly patterns of nickel, zinc, cadmium, mercury,363 organotin,364 and tellurium,365 366 complexes has been thoroughly analyzed and discussed in detail. Supramolecular self-assembly frequently occurs in non-transition heavier soft metal dithiocarbamates. Thus, lead(II),367 bismuth(III)368 zinc,369 cadmium,370 and (organo)mercury371 dithiocarbamates are associated through M- S secondary bonds, to form either dimeric supermolecules or chain-like supramolecular arrays. A different approach to unsymmetrical diorganyl tellurides, in which an electrophilic tellurium species is used, involves the nucleophilic attack of organomagnesium or organo-lithium reagents to diorganyl ditellurides. 

The present volume describes 1166 selenium, 489 tellurium, 90 chromium, and 8 platinum compounds. It is the first time that the organo-derivatives of these four elements have been collectively reviewed in detail. 

Since sulfur chemistry lies beyond the scope of this review and organo-tellurium chemistry so far has not been of any impact on organometallic chemistry in general, this section will be restricted to the discussion of redistribution equilibria on selenium. 

If unusual vinylic tellurides or vinylic tellurides of defined stereochemistry are required, other vinyl organo-metallics are employed. In recent years, a number of methods of preparing vinylic derivatives of tellurium using organotellurium halides have been developed.

Lithium methanetellurolate or lithium benzenetellurolate and chlorotrimethylsilane react at 20° in tetrahydrofuran to give bis[trimethylsilyl] tellurium in small yields5. The main product in these reactions is the organo trimethylsilyl tellurium compound.
