The Technical Escort Unit, the Army Chemical and Biological Defense Agency, is responsible for the escort of nonstockpile chemical material, emergency destruction of chemical munitions, and emergency response to chemical agent incidents. 

Chemical Units. Chemical units can provide assistance with decontamination of personnel and equipment. Special NBC surveillance units consisting of BEDS and FOX vehicles can provide early warning of chemical and biological attacks. The Technical Escort units usually handle the transportation of samples of suspected NBC agents. 

A. Sample Management of Suspected NBC Agents and Environmental Samples. Because suspected NBC samples have national security implications, all such samples must follow a chain of custody. Each theater should develop a SOP on sample management to include who is responsible for sample collection, transportation, and analysis. This SOP should be thoroughly developed and trained. The unit should first coordinate with the analysis laboratory for proper shipping instructions. If the sample is a suspected NBC agent, further coordination with a Technical Escort Unit will be necessary to ensure the proper chain of custody. 

B. Technical Escort Unit - transportation of suspected biological agents and samples. 

All workers should know the procedure for requesting medical assistance. Many installations have one hotline for medical, technical escort unit, and security support. Workers should be aware of any set format for reporting emergencies that will expedite the report and response time. Once assistance has arrived, the support personnel should be given accurate and complete information about the accident or incident. Teaching the worker... 

B. Sample/Specimen Collection. Sample/specimen collectors should use full protective gear. If the specimen or sample is to be tested for biological agents, it must be marked as such. Great care should be used to prevent cross-contamination of one sample/specimen by another. Routine medical sampling procedures will be modified so that proving and documenting the BW attack occurred. Highly technical units such as the 520th TAML and Tech Escort use Field Mini-CAMS. They are designed for field industry monitoring and require 8 hours of training.
