6 Target soil phases and single extractants for their attack 

This topic has been comprehensively discussed for soils (Pickering, 1986 Ure, 1996) for soils, sewage sludges and sludged soils (Beckett, 1989 McGrath, 1996) for soils and sediments (Ure et al., 1995) and for radionuclide and heavy metal availability (Kennedy et al., 1997). 

In this section the species associated with each soil phase or element binding type will be considered individually and the reagents used to extract them (ideally) discussed. Reagents and their target species are listed in Table 10.2.
