TappingMode™ AFM

Figure 3. TappingMode AFM image taken in DI water of phlogopite particles (mostly submicron) on a sapphire substrate. The height of the small particles in the image are between 10 and 40 nm. The change in the particle heights, to within an Angstrom, are measured with time as the particles react with the solution.

Figure 21-30 is an image of two intertwined DNA molecules on a mica surface obtained by a tappingmode AFM scan. Such measurements allow biochemists lo study the structure of DN.A and other biomolecules with relative ease.

AFM was carried out on a Digital Instruments Dimension 3100, in the TappingMode using a silicon tip. Both height and phase images of scanned areas 1 pm 25 pm and 400 pm were captured.
