Okada and co-workers (1988,1989,1991) and Ogawa etal. (1988) have also described a 75 25 PLGA microencapsulated 30-day release system for the delivery of another LHRH analog leuproUde acetate [(D-Leu , Pro NEt)-LHRH Lupron Depot , Takeda-Abbott], Their results indicate that a single injection of microcapsules maintains constant and effective serum levels of the analog for one month. This survey of the Western world should not make us forget that Japan also has a thriving pharmaceutical industry. Three firms in particular—Takeda, Sankyo, and Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company—are of international repute. Takeda, the largest, is also the oldest, having been founded by the Takeda family in 1781. It has a joint venture with Abbott in the United States. Out of twenty-five blockbuster drugs currently available in the United States, six were discovered in Japan. But Japan remains weak in biotechnological developments, which are the source of much Western drug innovation. 

As noted in Chapter 7, Takeda initiated its first venture overseas by forming a ten-year, 50-50 joint venture with Abbott to develop and market new products in 1977 and 1987 its venture was renewed for another ten years. In 1997 TAP Pharmaceuticals became a full-fledged subsidiary of the Japanese company, responsible for the production and marketing organizations for the North American market. In 1998 a comparable subsidiary for Europe was established in Frankfurt, Germany.
