Chinese and, importantly, the fact that a two Chinas policy was consistently advocated by revisionists as the solution to the Taiwan problem, a case cannot convincingly be made that a rapprochement was possible on the U.S. side during the 1960s. There was a real opportunity, in terms of official American attitudes, for the unilateral relaxation of China policy, but this is qualitatively different from a bilateral rapprochement or reconciliation.
