Tabular text visualizations

Some information is best communicated in a text format. For example, the values of the two-dimensional data array can be shown directly as a table, in which each cell displays a numeric pixel value. Visualization features available in spreadsheets are useful for tabular text visualizations. For example, colorization of the text or textboxes can be useful for highlighting different features of the data, such as peak... 

The list visualization techniques we propose use a spiral layout divided into sectors to display items (Fig. 1). In contrast with linear clipped lists, this compact layout makes it possible to show a large number of items. However, all items can not be shown if their number exceeds a certain limit (which is the number of sectors in the spiral). Moreover, items located in the innermost revolutions cannot be displayed with full details because their text labels would be too large. We thus combined this spiral representation with a focus-i-context strategy to increase the length of displayable lists in a limited amount of screen real-estate. We implemented this visualization technique in a Java desktop application. The software reads edit history files in a tabular format and creates a chromogram of the results. Fig. 3 shows a screenshot, with blurring where text might identify the editor. Here the chromogram shows a block view (as in Fig. 2c). 

Graphical, tabular, and CAD objects should be capable of being embedded in other text objects. The anchoring in these compound documents should be live , so that alteration of any object is automatically reflected in all other connected objects, and that fact visually...
