Below T polymers are stiff, hard, britde, and glass-like above if the molecular weight is high enough, they are relatively soft, limp, stretchable, and can be somewhat elastic. At even higher temperatures they flow and are tacky. Methods used to determine glass-transition temperatures and the reported values for a large number of polymers may be found in References 7—9. Values for the T of common acrylate homopolymers are found in Table 1. [Pg.162]

Table 1 shows that most acryflcs have low glass-transition temperatures. Therefore, in copolymers they tend to soften and flexibHize the overall composition. Plasticizers also lower the transition temperature. However, unlike incorporated acryflc comonomers, they can be lost through volatilization or extraction. [Pg.163]

The glass-transition temperature, T, of dry polyester is approximately 70°C and is slightly reduced ia water. The glass-transitioa temperatures of copolyesters are affected by both the amouat and chemical nature of the comonomer (32,47). The TPX experimental product of Mitsubishi Petrochemical Ind. (221) is an amorphous, transparent polyolefin with very low water absorption (0.01%) and a glass-transition temperature comparable to that of BPA-PC (ca 150°C). Birefringence (<20 nm/mm), flexural modulus, and elongation at break are on the same level as PMMA (221). The vacuum time, the time in minutes to reach a pressure of 0.13 mPa (10 torr), is similarly short like that of cychc polyolefins. Typical values of TPX are fisted in Table 11. A commercial application of TPX is not known as of this writing. [Pg.162]

In methacrylic ester polymers, the glass-transition temperature, is influenced primarily by the nature of the alcohol group as can be seen in Table 1. Below the the polymers are hard, brittle, and glass-like above the they are relatively soft, flexible, and mbbery. At even higher temperatures, depending on molecular weight, they flow and are tacky. Table 1 also contains typical values for the density, solubiHty parameter, and refractive index for various methacrylic homopolymers. [Pg.259]

The melt temperature of a polyurethane is important for processibiUty. Melting should occur well below the decomposition temperature. Below the glass-transition temperature the molecular motion is frozen, and the material is only able to undergo small-scale elastic deformations. For amorphous polyurethane elastomers, the T of the soft segment is ca —50 to —60 " C, whereas for the amorphous hard segment, T is in the 20—100°C range. The T and T of the mote common macrodiols used in the manufacture of TPU are Hsted in Table 2. [Pg.344]

The solubihty—temperature curves for the Na20—B2O2—H2O system are given in Figure 5 (Table 9). The solubiUty curves of the penta- and decahydrates intersect at 60.6—60.8°C, indicating that the decahydrate, when added to a saturated solution above this temperature, dissolves with crystallisa tion of the pentahydrate and the reverse occurs below this temperature. This transition temperature may be lowered in solutions of inorganic salts, eg, 49.3°C in solutions saturated with sodium sulfate and 39.6°C with sodium chloride. Heats of solution for borax have been determined (67,73) and the manufacturer quotes a value of about 283 kJ/kg (67.6 kcal/mol) (33). [Pg.196]

The highly polar nature of the TGMDA—DDS system results in high moisture absorption. The plasticization of epoxy matrices by absorbed water and its effect on composite properties have been well documented. As can be seen from Table 4, the TGMDA system can absorb as much as 6.5% (by weight) water (4). This absorbed water results in a dramatic drop in both the glass transition temperature and hot—wet flexural modulus (4—6). [Pg.21]

Two resin systems based on this chemical concept are commercially available from Shell Chemical Company/Technochemie under the COMPIMIDE trademark COMPIMIDE 183 (34) [98723-11-2], for use in printed circuit boards, and COMPIMIDE 796 [106856-59-1], as a resin for low pressure autoclave mol ding (35). Typical properties of COMPIMIDE 183 glass fabric—PCB laminates are provided in Table 8. COMPIMIDE 183 offers a combination of advantageous properties, such as a high glass transition temperature, low expansion coefficient, and flame resistance without bromine compound additives. [Pg.26]
