Syrup of Tolu

Take 15 parts syrup of gum-arabic, 5 parts syrup of tolu, 5 parts maiden-hair, 1 part nitrate of potassa, and 1 part cherry-laurel water. Dose, a table-spoonful in a cup of sweet balm tea, in short draughts. 

Powell s Cough Balsam. Mix together 2 drachms syrup of tolu, 1 ounce paregoric elixir, and 2 ounces liquorice juice. 

Linctus of Methadone Hydrochloride, B.P.C, Contains 0 057 per cent w/v of methadone hydrochloride in a base of glycerin and syrup of tolu, coloured with tartrazine. 

Syrup of Tolu, B.P. Contains an aqueous extract from balsam of tolu (mostly aromatic acids) in syrup. 

Goddard s Gonorrhoea Mixture, Tako 2 (Iraohrns oil of cubebs t ounce balsam of copaiba 1 ounce each eyrup of tolu and syrup of poppy 2 drachma itrong liquor of potassa 1 drachm oil of juniper and ounces peppermint water, A table-spoonful 3 times a day. 

Spackman a Copaiba Mixture. Mix together 2 drachms syrup of gum-arabic i ounce balsam of copaiba 24 drops oil of cubebs 1 ounce syrup of balsam of tolu ouucc each sweet spirits of nitre and compound tincture of opium 20 drops tincture of opium 3 drops oil of laveneW, and 3 drachms compound spirits of lavender. Dose, a table-spoonful 3 limes a day. 

Linctus of Codeine, B.P,C, Consists of syrup of codeine phosphate with wild cherry and tolu. For assay the method used for Syrup of Codeine Phosphate is applicable, using 20 g. 

Expectorants are the drugs which increase the production of bronchial secretion and reduce its viscosity to facilitate its removal by coughing. Expectorants can stimulate the expulsion of respiratory secretion either directly or reflexly. Certain volatile oils of plant origin such as oil of lemon, anise, eucalyptus by steam inhalation route increase the respiratory secretion by its direct action. Another compound, guaiacol, which is obtained from wood creosote or synthetically prepared, directly increase bronchial secretion and syrup tolu (Tolu balsum) act in same way.
