88 mmol), potassium carbonate (0.97 g, 7.00 mmol), and dry DMF (70 mL) was placed in a 200 mL round-bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer bar under argon. To this solution, -toluenethiol (0.28 g, 2.26 mmol) was added, and then the resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. 

The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and to the residue was added 1 M NaOH (50 mL). The mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3 X 25 mL) using a separatory funnel. The combined organic extracts were washed with brine (25 mL), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated in vacuo to afford the crude product.
