7 Preparation of functionalized graphene directly from graphite 

The rich intercalation chemistry of graphene has opened a new door to obtaining chemically fiinctionalized-graphene sheets. Previous reports show that three different techniques are used to prepare functionalized graphene directly from graphite (Loh et al., 2010). 

In this technique, first, graphite intercalation compound (GIC) is prepared by the reaction of graphite with an intercalating agent. GIC is a unique class of lamellar materials formed by the intercalation of atomic or molecular guests in the interlayer
