Synthesis of 4-acetylbiphenyl

The crude product was isolated by concentration of the reaction mixture and addition of diethyl ether (40 mL). The organic phase was successively washed with aqueous hydrochloric acid (5%, 20 mL), saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate (25 mL) and saturated aqueous sodium chloride (25 mL), dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in a rotary evaporator at reduced pressure. 

The crude 4-acetylbiphenyl was purified by column chromatography (silica gel 60, 35 g, 2% EtOAc/hexanes) followed by concentration and high vacuum drying (895 mg, 91% yield, as a white solid).[4]
