Synoptic forcing

The results of six real-data case studies are presented here. The case studies considered conditions including dry-line perturbations, tranquil conditions, weak disturbances with light precipitation, mild synoptic forcing, and severe weather environment. The atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is that portion of the atmosphere where surface drag due to the motion of the air relative to the ground modifies synoptic-scale motions caused by horizontal pressure gradients, Coriolis forces, and buoyancy. The depth of the ABL is highly variable (50 to 2000 m), but it generally increases with proximity to the equator, with wind speed, and as the earth surface roughness, but it decreases... 

Laboratory, and inorganic chemistry was housed in the Old Chemistry Department. If there was a unifying force it was provided by Sidgwick. His synoptic vision, which embraced the main three branches of chemistry, was revealed in his publications, his contributions to colloquia and seminars, and his dominance of both the Alembic Club and the Dyson Perrins tea club. It was rightly said after his death that he was a strict but not severe father of the whole Oxford school of chemistry.
