A range of symbolic conventions is used in representing atomic and molecular stractures at the electronic level. So for example double and triple lines are used for multiple bonds. This seems a clear convention, which helps keep check of valency rales. However the symbol = for a double bond is not intended to imply two equal bonds (which the symmetry of the symbol could seem to suggest) as u and TT components have different geometries, contributions to bond strength , and consequences for chemical properties. The novice learner may well find interpreting such representations a considerable challenge. [Pg.80]

The quality-interpretation in the form of a vitality index correlated significantly and well between the two analyses (R2 = 0.72 filled symbols = organic open symbols = conventional same symbol form = same village). Throughout the book, the following symbol convention will be used dimensioned quantities like concentration, distance or time will be given lowercase symbols (c, x, t, etc.) and their non-dimensional equivalents will be given the corresponding upper-case symbols (C, X, T, etc.), with a few unavoidable exceptions. [Pg.5]

The use of reference electrodes frequently poses the problem of an additional potential drop between the electrolytes of the electrode under study and of the reference one. For liquid electrolytes, this drop arises at the solution/solution interface (liquid junction). The symbol conventionally denotes an interface of two solutions with a diffusion potential drop in between if this drop is eliminated (see later), then the... [Pg.9]
