This approach has not yet been applied to the history of research in the pharmaceutical industry. The situation in that industry is complicated by unusual factors. For ethical reasons the enterprises in the pharmaceutical industry were not, and are not, in positions to carry out all the stages of research themselves. This holds true, for example, when experiments on human subjects are deemed necessary. For this reason, contacts with university researchers have always remained of great significance for the pharmaceutical industry. John P.
