Swallowing Up

Tiny microparticles came together to form microagglomerates, and these in turn formed larger clots, which then formed larger bodies, the diameter of which was initially measured in centimetres but later increased to metres such planetary building blocks are known as planetesimals . Computer simulations indicate that these existed around four and a half billion years ago (Wetherhill, 1981). Planetesimals grew to form bodies which were several kilometres across, and there were often collisions in which larger bodies were swallowed up by smaller ones a process which is not unknown in modern economics ... [Pg.26]

The Sun reaches a luminosity 2300 times greater than its current value and a radius 170 times greater. The planet Mercury is swallowed up. The solar wind is now much amplified and our star loses 38% of its mass into space. [Pg.132]

The sixteen people around you in a rolling motor-bus are, in turn and at the same time, one, ten, four, three they are motionless and they change places they come and go, bound into the street, are suddenly swallowed up by the sunshine, then come back and sit before you, like persistent symbols of universal vibration.. . . The motor-bus rushes into the houses which it passes, and, in their turn, the houses throw themselves upon the motor bus, and are blended with it. ... [Pg.89]

If allowed by the court an appeals procedure is often pursued and yet again there must be sufficient grounds for such an appeal. This whole process can swallow up time and expense to an enormous degree - even to the point where the litigation overshadows the business of the company. Some companies have become notorious in business development circles for their rapid and ready resort to law to solve their problems or disrupt the business of competitors. It would be nice to think that these practices will not proliferate further but in view of the litigious hostilities between research-based companies and generic manufacturers this is not possible. The battlefront is entrenched and the law is the primary means of attack and defence. [Pg.178]

Figure 8.2 Logarithmic spiral with superimposed mean planetary orbits. The circles in blue define the orbits of inner planets on a larger (self-similarj scale. The divergence angle of 108° causes those planets at angles of 5 x 108° apart to lie on opposite sides of the spiral origin. These pairs are Neptune-Mars, Uranus-Earth, Saturn-Venus and Jupiter-Mercury. The hypothetical antipode of the asteroid belt, a second, unobserved group of unagglomerated fragments, has been swallowed up by the sun... The light from his lamp seems to be swallowed up by the membrane before him. He holds his breath. The large eye reminds him of an insect eye. This impression is enhanced by its many tiny facets. Every few seconds the eye jitters, and then the veins wander over the membrane like worms on an infected scalp. Some move in straight lines, others move in small spiral eddies. [Pg.51]

The stock plunged from nearly 100 at the end of 2000 to the 40s in the summer and early fall of 2002. Merck unexpectedly announced in June 2001 that it would miss its earnings for that year, then followed up in December with the shocker that its earnings for the next year would be flat. On Wall Street, the pressure grew to seek a merger, even as archrival Pfizer swallowed up Warner-Lambert Company, then Pharmacia. [Pg.43]

When we reach the shed, I take a gasp of fresh air before being swallowed up. Gill is inside, shoveling coal into the arch of the furnace mouth, which roars orange. [Pg.2]

In today s world, heroin addiction has reached epidemic proportions. It swallows up many people, especially the young, in unproductive lives of great hardship and cost to themselves and society, and is rightly a cause for serious concern. It is not only the downtrodden poor of urban ghettos who become heroin addicts, but the children of all social and economic classes and many of their parents as well. [Pg.86]

The structure of a molecule that one observes will depend on the timescale of the experiment relative to the dynamics of the molecule. Crystallography yields the space-averaged structure. One obtains information regarding the average position of the atoms, the dynamics are swallowed up in the temperature factors. The calculation proceeds by first identifying the dominant vibrational mode(s) involved in the coupling. For d and high-spin d" complexes, this is the U2(ML6) asymmetric skeletal stretch depicted in Fig 7 below ... [Pg.381]

Adams immortal Light-Body was now concealed in this terra damnata, that is in the coarse earthly body. Yes, he himself became powerless and dark, because his noblest powers were swallowed up by the earthly Body. The "Tree of Life" became the Tree of Death. [Pg.51]

A.—I have told you that it is a salt the fire surrounded the salt and the water swallowed up the fire, yet overcame it not so is made the philosopher s fire, of which they speak the vulgar burn with fire, we with water. [Pg.5]

Of course, Eve may use some more sophisticated measurements (e.g., such that does not swallow up the original photon). However, it can be shown that the resultant effect is qualitatively the same (see Section VIII.D). In general any interaction modifies the states of a photon. [Pg.569]
