Most recovery boilers use 63,5 mm OD carbon steel tubes in the generating bank. With a few exceptions these tubes are swaged at the ends to 50,8 mm. When the 63,5 mm raw tube is manufactured it is subject to a lot of specifications i.e. ASME. There are no specifications for the swaged end of the tube. This is unfortunate as the swaged part of the tube is subjected to further mechanical deformation dtuing the rolling procedure and is located in a wastage zone of tire recovery boiler. 

The wall thickness for a typical generator tube in the swaged is 4,2 - 4,7 mm with a typical circumferential wall thickness variation 0,25 mm. The swage on a tube is typically formed in one of four ways ...

Downstream line size less than 200 mm swaged up or "Teed" to 200 mm or larger line downstream line velocity greater than 50% sonic and pressure ratio greater than 5.

Swaging Swaging is performed hot, the temperature commencing at about 1 300 C and falling as the ductility of the metal improves to about TOC C. 

Rolling and swaging Vacuum-sintered bar can be cold rolled, and reductions up to 90% between anneals are possible. Arc-cast and electron-beam-melted material is generally forged at room temperature prior to rolling and swaging.

NcLe that these units should not be connected in lines larger than their pipe inlet, since inlet velocity conditions are very important, the swaging down or reduction tends to produce a jet effect by the gas upon the mist eliminator unit. This may erode the unit and cause other erratic performance... 

A significant discovery was a new commercial product, Pyrofuze (Ref 5 this Vol) which consists of very thin clad sheets of Pd (or Pt).on Al, or very finely swaged Pd wires which have ah Al core.
