Strategies for sustainable product design should include the design of products as biological nutrients within biological metabolisms or technical nutrients within technical metabolisms. 

Expertise to help companies already exists in many countries. Companies who are adopting safer alternatives often contract outside help. Chemical producers have their own in-house research teams. Other institutes work with SMEs such as the European Cleaner Production networks and some Member States have well-established programmes that focus on sustainable product design and safer chemical use. 

Beckman emphasized that the convergence of chemistry and engineering is needed to accomplish real green design. Beckman cited an article from the Journal of Business ResearcE on how to achieve sustainable product design. The article features three approaches ...

While some may argue that there is no good time for innovation, others see the potential benefits and understand that sustainable product design is a driver for innovation and will profit those who engage in it. The cradle-to-cradle approach can be an especially potent catalyst for innovation because it offers both a practical structure for application, and a compelling and hopeful vision.
