Environmental chemistry needs to be distinguished from its later offshoot, green chemistry. As environmental chemistry developed, it tended to emphasize the detection and mitigation of pollutants, the study of the beneficial and adverse effects of various chemicals on the environment, and how the beneficial effects could be enhanced and the adverse eliminated or attenuated. Green chemistry, however, focuses on how to create sustainable, safe, and nonpolluting chemicals in ways that minimize the ecological footprint of the processes.
