Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is Hsted in the 1990 United States Pharmacopeia under the categories of pharmaceutic aid (suspending agent, tablet binder, viscosity-increasing agent), and cathartic tablets.

Suspending agent systems such as a pseudoplastic (sodium carboxymethylcellulose) in combination with a clay (hydrated colloidal magnesium aluminum silicate) or blends and coprecipitates of sodium carboxymethylcellulose and microcrystalline cellulose exhibit some thixotropic flow characteristics. Other pseudoplastics such as hydroxyethylcellulose or hydroxy-propyl methyl cellulose may be required to overcome possible in compatibilities with sodium carboxymethylcellulose.

Sodium carboxymethylcellulose is readily soluble in water and is insoluble in organic solvents. The material is used as a soil-suspending agent in detergents, suspending agent in latex paints and as an adhesive it is also used as a stabiUzer in food products such as ice cream. 

Recent studies evaluated Sesamum indicum L., sesame (Pedaliaceae) gum for its useful properties in the drug industry as a binder/hydrophilic polymer in the formulation of sustained release paracetamol granules and tablets, compared with standard binders Arabic gum, gelatin, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose [277] for the intestinal delivery of antifilarial drug diethylcarbamazine tablets [278] as an accessible, cost-effective and eco-friendly suspending agent in a pediatric pharmaceutical suspensions, compared with Arabic gum and tragacanth [279].
