Extensive discussions have focused on the conformation of the alkyl chains in the interior ". It has been has demonstrated that the alkyl chains of micellised surfactant are not fully extended. Starting from the headgroup, the first two or three carbon-carbon bonds are usually trans, whereas gauche conformations are likely to be encountered near the centre of tlie chain ". As a result, the methyl termini of the surfactant molecules can be located near the surface of the micelle, and have even been suggested to be able to protrude into the aqueous phase "". They are definitely not all gathered in the centre of tire micelle as is often suggested in pictorial representations. NMR studies have indicated that the hydrocarbon chains in a micelle are highly mobile, comparable to the mobility of a liquid alkane ... 

There is no official or universally accepted definition of what constitutes a "microemulsion." In fact, for several years, some leading scientists in microemulsion research considered the term to be an unnecessary and even an unfortunate one. Nevertheless (Table 1), during the years from about 1975 to 1980 the word ascended from obscurity to ubiquity. By the end of 1996 there were 13 widely available Knglish-language books (1 9) with the word "Microemulsion" in their tides (10). About 70 more books on surfactants are in print, of which those on industrial appHcations (9,11—18), and environmental effects (19—21) are of particular interest here. 

It has been shown (16) that a stable foam possesses both a high surface dilatational viscosity and elasticity. In principle, defoamers should reduce these properties. Ideally a spread duplex film, one thick enough to have two definite surfaces enclosing a bulk phase, should eliminate dilatational effects because the surface tension of an iasoluble, one-component layer does not depend on its thickness. This effect has been verified (17). SiUcone antifoams reduce both the surface dilatational elasticity and viscosity of cmde oils as iUustrated ia Table 2 (17). The PDMS materials are Dow Coming Ltd. polydimethylsiloxane fluids, SK 3556 is a Th. Goldschmidt Ltd. siUcone oil, and FC 740 is a 3M Co. Ltd. fluorocarbon profoaming surfactant. 

The line = 0 can be considered as a borderline for applicability of the basic model, in which the Gaussian curvature is always negative. Recall that in the basic model the oil-water interface is saturated by the surfactant molecules by construction of the model. Hence, for equal oil and water volume fractions the Gaussian curvature must be negative, by the definition of the model.
