Block resistance - wet/dry - ink to ink and ink to substrate The exposure time, pressure, and temperature are specified by the end use requirement (i.e. 3 min at 1034 bar, 50 °C for surface print ink (5.4) - The ink surface s resistance to heat and pressure is subjectively measured. Ink properties that effect blocking results are hardness , adhesion, cohesion, and slip. Eihyl-l-buianol, b.p. 147 "C, is used in synthesis and as a solvent for printing inks and surface coatings. 

Fluidyibsorbamy. Fluids like ink penetrate into paper during the printing process. The further the ink penetrates, the less glossy the print. The degree of penetration in paper is generally a function of the paper porosity and wettabiUty by the fluid. It can be controlled by the particle size, shape, and chemical nature of the filler or filler surface. In particular, plate-like fillers, such as clays, tend to produce the best fluid holdout because they tend to overlap and reduce the porosity at the paper surface (see Inks). 

The chemical materials requited for this process iaclude the cormgatiag adhesive, 1—1.2 MPa (150—175 psi) process steam to provide heat to set the cormgator adhesive, possible coatings appHed to the surface of the linerboard facings, possible chemicals impregnated into the linerboard and/or medium, the manufacturer s (glue) joint adhesive, and the printing ink (see Inks). 

Melamine—Formaldehyde Resins. The most versatile textile-finishing resins are the melamine—formaldehyde resins. They provide wash-and-wear properties to ceUulosic fabrics, and enhance the wash durabiHty of flame-retardant finishes. Butylated melamine —formaldehyde resins of the type used in surface coatings may be used in textile printing-ink formulations. A typical textile melamine resin is the dimethyl ether of trimethylolmelamine [1852-22-8] which can be prepared as follows ... 

Table 11 Hsts the types and appHcations of special pigment-grade carbon blacks. Included in this Hst are thermal black and lampblack. Over 40 special black grades have been developed based on the furnace process having a broad range of surface areas, from 20 m /g to over 1500 m /g. The lower surface area products are used in printing inks and tinting. The high area, more expensive products find use in high color enamels and lacquers.

Inks. Refined kaolin is a common ingredient in a large variety of printing inks (qv). In addition to extending the more expensive polymers present, ka olin also contributes to improved color strength, limits the penetration of the ink into the paper, controls rheology, and improves adhesion. Kaolin for this appHcation must usually be as white as possible and free from oversize particles. Surface treated clays are used to improve compatibiHty with oil-based ink. Clays can also be an ingredient in the newer water-based or uv-cured inks. 

Screen Printing Ink is applied to part through a finely woven screen. Screen is masked in areas that won t be painted. Economical means for decorating flat or curved surfaces, especially in relatively short runs. Screens, fixture, squeegee conveyorized press setup (for any kind of volume). EB radiation-cured PVC film surface induces a big improvement in tensile strength and excellent printing ink adhesion and adhesive receptance [302]. PVC foams containing plasticizers, thermally activated blowing agents, cross-linkers, and heat stabilizers have been manufactured by EB radiation technology [303].
