Surface Modification of Fillers and Curatives by Plasma Polymerization... [Pg.169]

In the following section, a new technique of surface modification of fillers and curing agents will be discussed plasma polymerization. This technique allows for surface coating of powders, whereby the chemical structure of the coating is determined by the monomer used for the process. The morphology of the substrate is preserved, which is an important precondition for filler treatment. The polarity of the functional groups can be chosen to fit the matrix of the polymer wherein it will be applied. [Pg.170]

From these comparisons it is clear that every quantum improvement in the fatigue cycles can be attributed to the plasma surface modifications of fillers. Among the improvement of fatigue properties by the plasma treatments on the carbon fibers, as shown in Figure 30.28, the oxygen plasma posttreatment showed a better effect that was already seen in the plasma treatment on the X-ray opaque powder. There were reports that the oxygen plasma-treated surface showed a better adhesion to PMMA than the argon plasma-treated surface [46 9]. [Pg.657]

Surface modification of fillers, powders, and silica film-forming additive (all industries) for inducing the surface effects mentioned above... [Pg.685]

In summary, tensile yield stress depends on filler particle size, concentration and on the interaction between the matrix and the filler. There are various means of improving tensile yield stress through the proper selection of filler for a particular polymers and through the surface modification of filler. [Pg.407]

Special methods of incorporation usually surface modification of filler is performed prior to filler incorporation into the polymer high concentration of calcium carbonate (40 wt%) provides a fihn which has properties similar to paper but surpasses paper in resistance to moisture chlorinated PE containing carboxyl groups was used as compatibilizer with calcium carbonate " masterbatches of titanium dioxide contain 40-50 wt% pigment " rubber modification to incorporate zirconium silicate without a loss of mechanical strength ... [Pg.646]

A new area of development is to incorporate the filler permanently into the polymer matrix, by use of coupling reactions. This can increase impact strength and thermal properties of polyamides and modify the anisotropy of partially crystalline plastics, such as polyamides and polyesters. In polypropylene, bonding with kaolin can also improve scratch resistance, which is a useful benefit for automobile interior applications. Surface modification of fillers such as silica, mica, and wollastonite allows these to penetrate markets that were formerly the province of reinforcements such as carbon black and glass fibre. [Pg.7]
