Surface metal carburization

Accelerated deterioration of metals in carbonaceous gases at elevated temperatures to form a dust-fike corrosion product a unique form of high-temperature corrosion that forms a dust-hke corrosion product and sometimes develops hemispherical pits on a susceptible metal surface simultaneous carburization is generally observed. [Pg.499]

P/M steels can be heat treated in the same manner as cast or wrought steels. They may be austenitized, quenched, and tempered. Surface hardening includes pack or gas carburization or nitriding, ie, heating in a nitrogen-containing atmosphere. The first syntheses of transition metal nitrides and carbides were derived from metallurgical processes,1,3 and consisted in the nitridation or carburization of the metal or of the oxide at severe conditions, in particular at high temperatures (>1500 K). No epitaxy could be obtained by reaction of the metal films with reactive gas for short reactions times. This is understandable as the carburization and nitridation reactions progress from the surface of the metal films to the substrate and occur with a change in crystal structure of the film (for instance bcc to hex). So even if the starting metal film is epitaxial, the final carbide or nitride compound could be polycrystalline. In such reactions as the tarnishing of silver in air, the oxidation of aluminum in air, or attack of lead in sulfate-containing environments, thin, tightly adherent protective films are formed, and the metal surface remains smooth. It should be mentioned that underground corrosion is frequently observed as localized corrosion. The feedstock in hydrodealkylation units is heated to 1,200° F (650°C) in a preheat furnace before entering the reactor. Above 1,100°F (590°C), metal dusting or catastrophic carburization occurs on ail alloys that are otherwise suitable for the temperature conditions. The attack is very rapid and takes the form of round bottom pits. The surface of the remaining metal is heavily carburized. A small quantity of sulfur (0.05 to 0.5 wt%) in the form of hydrogen sulfide or mercaptan added to the feed will prevent attack. Aluminizing has also been used to prevent attack. [Pg.81]
