A large fraction of practical catalysts consists of transition-metal or metal oxide nanoparticles dispersed onto the surface of insulator or semiconductor oxides that function as support materials. For industrial applications, the supports employed are selected on the basis of their surface area (high surface area is usually, but not always, desirable), high thermal and hydrothermal stability, chemical stability, and mechanical strength. [Pg.762]

As a tme thermoplastic, FEP copolymer can be melt-processed by extmsion and compression, injection, and blow molding. Films can be heat-bonded and sealed, vacuum-formed, and laminated to various substrates. Chemical inertness and corrosion resistance make FEP highly suitable for chemical services its dielectric and insulating properties favor it for electrical and electronic service and its low frictional properties, mechanical toughness, thermal stabiUty, and nonstick quaUty make it highly suitable for bearings and seals, high temperature components, and nonstick surfaces. [Pg.358]

The principal chemical markets for acetylene at present are its uses in the preparation of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and 1,4-butanediol. Polymers from these monomers reach the consumer in the form of surface coatings (paints, films, sheets, or textiles), containers, pipe, electrical wire insulation, adhesives, and many other products which total biUions of kg. The acetylene routes to these monomers were once dominant but have been largely displaced by newer processes based on olefinic starting materials. [Pg.393]

Some of the chemicals mentioned above and others, such as chlorinated mbber or paraffin, antimony trioxide, calcium carbonate, calcium borate, pentaerythrithol, alumina trihydrate, titanium dioxide, and urea—melamine—formaldehyde resin, may be used to formulate fire retardant coatings. Many of these coatings are formulated in such a way that the films intumesce (expand) when exposed to fire, thus insulating the wood surface from further thermal exposure. Fire retardant coatings are mostly used for existing constmction. [Pg.329]
