The characteristics of a powder that determine its apparent density are rather complex, but some general statements with respect to powder variables and their effect on the density of the loose powder can be made. (/) The smaller the particles, the greater the specific surface area of the powder. This increases the friction between the particles and lowers the apparent density but enhances the rate of sintering. (2) Powders having very irregular-shaped particles are usually characterized by a lower apparent density than more regular or spherical ones. This is shown in Table 4 for three different types of copper powders having identical particle size distribution but different particle shape. These data illustrate the decisive influence of particle shape on apparent density. (J) In any mixture of coarse and fine powder particles, an optimum mixture results in maximum apparent density. This optimum mixture is reached when the fine particles fill the voids between the coarse particles. [Pg.181]

Sindlady, heating surface area needs are not direcdy proportional to the number of effects used. For some types of evaporator, heat-transfer coefficients decline with temperature difference as effects are added the surface needed in each effect increases. On the other hand, heat-transfer coefficients increase with temperature level. In a single effect, all evaporation takes place at a temperature near that of the heat sink, whereas in a double effect half the evaporation takes place at this temperature and the other half at a higher temperature, thereby improving the mean evaporating temperature. Other factors to be considered are the BPR, which is additive in a multiple-effect evaporator and therefore reduces the net AT available for heat transfer as the number of effects is increased, and the reduced demand for steam and cooling water and hence the capital costs of these auxiUaries as the number of effects is increased. [Pg.476]

The condition of the test metal is important. Clean metal samples with uniform finishes are preferred. The accelerating effects of surface defects lead to deceptive results in samples. The ratio of the area of a defect to the total surface area of the metal is much higlier in a sample than in any metal in service. This is an indication of the inaccuracy of tests made on metals with improper finishes. The sample metal should have the same type of heat treatment as the metal to be used in service. Different heat treatments have different effects on corrosion. Heat treatment may improve or reduce the corrosion resistance of a metal in an unpredictable manner. For the purpose of selectivity, a metal stress corrosion test may be performed. General trends of the performance of a material can be obtained from such tests however, it is difficult to reproduce the stress that actually will occur during service. [Pg.19]

Before eonsidering the effects of water injection in an EGT type plant, it is worthwhile to refer to the earlier studies on the performanee of some dry recuperative cycles. Fig. 6.6 shows the T..s diagram of a [CBT i X r cyele, with a heat exchanger effectiveness of unity. It is implied that the surface area for heat transfer is very large, so that the outlet temperature on the cold side is the same as the inlet temperature on the hot side. A third way to increase both the active surface area and the number of oxygenated species at the electrode surface is to prepare alloy particles or deposits and then to dissolve the non-noble metal component.
