There should not be more than 1 sulphite-reducing, spore-forming anaerobe in 20 ml of drinking water. They must not be detectable at all in 30 ml of mineral water.

Growing and identification of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and sulphite-reducing, spore-forming anaerobes (Clostridia) should only be carried out by persons with appropriate training. 

In case of bad smell troubles, count of anaerobes and sulphite-reducing bacteria are useful as well as measures in lab of VFA (Volatile Fatty Acid). 

Under anaerobic conditions sulphite is reduced to hydrogen sulphide, which causes black colouring of the medium with iron ions as a result of FeS or FeS2. 

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is another important compound in MIC. H2S is produced by sulphate-reducing prokaryotes under anaerobic conditions from sulphate, sulphite, sometimes sulphur, and also thiosulphate. As mentioned before, SRP use incompletely reduced sulphur compounds as electron acceptors for their anaerobic respiration.
