Both the automatic coulometric titration of petroleum streams and the continuous monitoring of pesticides and sulfur-halogen compounds indicate that the coulometric titrator method is amenable to the automatic maintenance of the concentration of a component in a solution system. A manual version of this approach has been used to study the kinetics of hydrogenation of olefins as well as to determine the rate of hydrolysis of esters.12 The latter system is a pH-stat that is based on the principles of coulometric titrations. Equations (4.9)-(4.11) indicate how this approach is applied to the evaluation of the rate constants for ester hydrolysis. A similar approach could be used to develop procedures for kinetic studies that involve most of the electrochemical intermediates summarized in Table 4.1. The coulometric titration method provides a convenient means to extend the range of systems that can be subjected to kinetic study in solution. 

Volatile oil is a mixture of numerous components such as terpenes, amines, sulfur, halogenated compounds, nonterpenic hydrocarbons, and others (acids, alcohols, aldehydes, phenols, etc.) [12].

Usually best choice for desiccation of gases (<3% water) such as argon, helium, hydrogen, chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, ammonia, air, and chemical classes such as aliphatics, aromatics, halogenated compounds, oxygenated compounds (siUca gel, zeoHtes, activated alumina all alternatives some regenerable, some not). 

Phosphorous- and sulfur-containing compounds separated by GC have been determined with both He and N2 MIP-MS systems with low ng to pg detection limits [335], Halogenated compounds and organotins can be determined by GC-MIP-MS, at low to sub-pg detection limits. 

An efficient, low temperature oxidation catalyst was developed based on highly disperse metal catalyst on nanostructured Ti02 support. Addition of dopants inhibits metal sintering and prevents catalyst deactivation. The nanostructured catalyst was formulated to tolerate common poisons found in environments such as halogen- and sulfur-containing compounds. The nanocatalyst is capable of oxidizing carbon monoxide and common VOCs to carbon dioxide and water at near ambient temperatures (25-50 °C). 

Finely divided thorium metal is pyrophoric in air, and thorium ribbon burns in air to give the oxide. The metal also reacts vigorously with hydrogen, nitrogen, the halogens, and sulfur. Thorium compounds are stable in +4 oxidation state (Katzin 1983). Details of thorium chemistry are given by Katzin (1983). 

Landtreat is a silicate-based inorganic polymer catalyst used for the ex situ treatment of contaminated soils. The vendor claims that it acts as a catalyst to degrade halogenated compounds and organic compounds containing nitrogen and sulfur.
