The level of technical service support provided for a given product generally tracks in large part where the suppHer considers thek product to be located within the spectmm of commodity to specialty chemicals. Technical service support levels for pure chemicals usually provided in large quantities for specific synthetic or processing needs, eg, ammonia (qv), sulfuric acid (see SuLFURic ACID AND SULFURTRIOXIDe), formaldehyde (qv), oxygen (qv), and so forth, are considerably less than for more complex materials or blends of materials provided for multistep downstream processes. Examples of the latter are many polymers, colorants, flocculants, impact modifiers, associative thickeners, etc. For the former materials, providing specifications of purity and physical properties often comprises the full extent of technical service requked or expected by customers. Physical Properties Sulfur mustard (mustard gas) is a colorless oil with bp of 227°C, mp of 14°C, molecular dipole moment 1.78 D (hexane), and molecular mass of 159. It normally is encountered as an impure, pale yellow-brown, odoriferous liquid. The color generally deepens with increasing amounts of impurity. HD has a vapor density of 5.4 relative to air and a vapor pressure of 0.072 mm Hg at 20°C. As a liquid, it is slightly denser than water (1.27 g/mL at 20°C). Properties.—Physical.—Sulfur is usually yellow in color. At low temperatures, and in minute subdivision, as in the precipitated milk of sulfur, sulfur prsecipitatum (U. S.), it is almost or- quite colorless. Its taste and odor are faint but characteristic. At 114 (237°. 3 F.) it fuses to a thin yellow liquid, which at 150°-160 (302 -320 F.) becomes thick and brown at 330°-340° (620°— 643°.2 F.) it again becomes thin and light in color finally it boils, giving off brownish-yellow vapor at a temperature variouslv stated between 440° (824° F.) and 448 (838°.4 F.). If heated to-about 400° (753° F.) and suddenly cooled, it is converted into plastic sulfur, which may be moulded into any desired form. It is insoluble in water, sparingly soluble in anilin, phenol, benzene, benzin, and chloroform readily soluble in protochlorid of sulfur and carbon disulfid. It dissolves in hot alcohol, and crystallizes from the solution, on cooling, in white prismatic crystals. It is dimorphous. When fused sulfur crystallizes it does so in oblique rhombic prisms.
