Sulfonyl nitriles

Few reactions of sulfonylfuroxans with olefins have been reported. Depending on the substituents at the furoxan ring, nature of dipolarophile, and temperature, different types of products may be obtained. It is relatively simple to cyclore-vert disulfonylfuroxans to a-sulfonyl nitrile oxides on thermolysis (81TL3371, 85T727). These nitrile oxides were trapped by dipolarophiles to yield sulfonyl-substituted isoxazole derivatives. For example, 3,4-bis(phenylsulfonyl)furoxan reacts with an excess of styrene in xylene under reflux to afford the corresponding isoxazoline 290 (Scheme 189). [Pg.161]

A catch and release synthesis of tetrazoles and cyclic amidines has been reported making use of solid-supported oximes [94]. When bound sulpho-nyloximes, obtained by reacting polymer supported sulfonyl chloride with oximes, were reacted with nucleophiles, tetrazoles or cychc amidines were obtained (Scheme 19). Alternatively, the use of TMS-CN affords imino nitriles, which have been used as intermediates for the preparation of indoles, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridines, quinoxalines and benzimidazoles. [Pg.147]

Trialkylboranes react rapidly and in high yields with a-halo ketones,a-halo esters, a-halo nitriles, and a-halo sulfonyl derivatives (sulfones, sulfonic esters, sulfonamides) in the presence of a base to give, respectively, alkylated ketones, esters, nitriles, and sulfonyl derivatives. Potassium tert-butoxide is often a suitable base, but potassium 2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxide at 0°C in THF gives better results in most cases, possibly because the large bulk of the two tert-buXy groups prevents the base from coordinating with the R3B. The trialkylboranes are prepared by treatment of 3 mol of an alkene with 1 mol of BH3 (15-16). The alkylation of activated halogen compounds is one of several reactions of trialkylboranes developed by Brown (see also 15-16,15-25,18-31-18-40, etc.). These compounds are extremely versatile and can be used for the preparation of many types of compounds. In this reaction, for example, an alkene (through the BR3 prepared from it) can be coupled to a ketone, a nitrile, a carboxylic ester, or a sulfonyl derivative. Note that this is still another indirect way to alkylate a ketone (see 10-105) or a carboxylic acid (see 10-106), and provides an additional alternative to the malonic ester and acetoacetic ester syntheses (10-104). [Pg.560]

An efficient synthetic route to (10Z)- and (10 )-19-lluoro-la,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3 has been developed (488). The key feature of this pathway is the introduction of a 19-fluoromethylene group to a (5 )-19-nor-10-oxo-vitamin D derivative. The 10-oxo compound 445 has been obtained via a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction of (5 )-la,25-dihydroxyvitamin D with in situ generated nitrile oxide, followed by ring cleavage of the formed isoxazoline moiety with molybdenum hexacarbonyl. Conversion of the keto group of (5 )-19-nor-10-oxo-vitamin D to the E and Z fluoromethylene group has been achieved via a two-step sequence, involving a reaction of lithiofluoromethyl phenyl sulfone, followed by the reductive de-sulfonylation of the u-lluoro-j3-hydroxysulfone. The dye-sensitized photoisomerization of the (5 )-19-fluorovitamin D affords the desired (5Z)-19-fluorovitamin D derivatives, (10Z)- and (10 )-19-fluoro-la,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3. [Pg.98]

Triazoles have also been obtained when the carbon atom adjacent to the activated methylene group carries a nitrogen function (i.e., amides, nitriles, amidines, and imines - ). In many of these cases it is impossible to decide, without N-labeling experiments, whether the third nitrogen of the triazole ring is derived from the toluene-p-sulfonyl azide or from the activated methylene compound. With amides, amidines, and nitriles, the first possibility seems more reasonable, but with imines, the third nitrogen is that of the imino group (Scheme... [Pg.46]

A special case involves the thermal decomposition of 3,4-dinitrofuroxan (104). The cycloreversion is already observed at room temperature and the nitroformo-nitrile oxide could be trapped with electron-deficient nitriles. The cycloadditions with styrene, phenylacetylene, frani-stilbene, and cyclohexene, however, led to complex mixtures of products that could not be separated (104). In the related case of a furoxan with an a-hydrogen adjacent to the sulfonyl group, the reaction was proposed to proceed according to course (b) (Scheme 6.7). [Pg.372]
