Tt is not necessary for this Gold to have previously been subjected to exaltation sublimation or volatilization) or transfusion. The general principles of Hg photosensitization are fully discussed in Calvert and Pitts text [1], and the early history of the subject is covered in a 1963 article by Gunning and Strauss [2]. Briefly, a low-pressure mercury-vapor lamp produces 254 nm radiation that is absorbed by trace mercury in the vapor phase of a quartz photoreactor. A drop of mercury can be added to the reactor to ensure enough Hg vapor is present. The mercury atom in the reactor is excited to the relatively long-lived (ca 10 7 s) 3P2 state, denoted Hg this is the reactive species that attacks the organic substrate.

Boerhaave states that some adepts claim to have seen the spirit sealed up in the sulphur of metals and fossils and that the same spirits when freed are exceedingly active, able to insinuate into any other body and of great efficacy against diseases, which was a common opinion in alchemy. Boerhaave referred to the general opinion that sulphur, or rather philosophical sulphur, was an abstract principle, an inherent constitutive element within matter. In the forming of metals, mercury was said to consist of matter, and sulphur of form. In a refined form sulphur was generally symbolised by the sun, hence the mentioning of spiritus rector as the son of the sun. Boerhaave does not discuss the alchemical notions any further. He did not deny the tmth of the matter, but since he felt that he had not mastered the subject he left it to the adepts. ...

I shall conclude by deducing from these experiments the principle I have estab-lished at the commencement of this memoir, viz. that iron like many other metals is subject to the law of nature which presides at every true combination, that is to say, that it unites with two constant proportions of oxygen. Here again we know today that KuCera was trying to cope with a complex of electrochemical problems of which he could not have been fully aware in his time. Hence he was unable to bring his method, based on sound principles, to its due perfection. In 1918 he suggested to his student, J.Heyrovsky, that he take up the surface tension measurements with the dropping mercury electrode as a subject for research.
