SUBJECTS fertilisers

This book should be of immense help to chemical engineers, materials managers, maintenance engineers and practitioners in rubber and students alike. Moreover this will be a reference book for workers in fertilisers, caustic soda and other chemical and process industries. The clear and primarily non-technical style of writing for a technical subject such as this, which the author intended as far as possible, will also attract general readers with a more limited knowledge of rubber. 

Medicinal products, cosmetics, explosives, nx)tective chemicals (sUmicides and wood preservatives), pesticides, foodstuffs, food additives, animal feed and feed additives, fertilisers, wastes and chemicals in transit are exempt from the notification provisions of the Chemicals Act. Substances supplied at <10 kg a and polymers which contain <2% of a new substance monomer are also exempt from notification, but are subject to the standard reporting to the National Board of Labour Protection if they are classified as toxic or very toxic . Finally, substances sujqdied at <100 kg a for scientific research or for commercial development to a limit number of customers without tonnage restriction for one year only (which may be extended to 2 years) do not have to be notified, but certain relevant information is required by the National Board of Health. 

This article will review the antifungal activity of plant steroids but it should be noted that not all steroids act in an inhibitory capacity towards fungi. Certain sterols have a stimulatory effect on fungal development promoting growth, the differentiation of reproductive structures, and fertilisation in species of Pythium and Phytophthora which lack the ability to synthesize sterols (9). This subject is considered elsewhere in this volume. 

The use of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, particularly as fertilisers, is likely to increase throughout the present century (Chapter 12.2). This will be necessary in order to feed the rapidly expanding world population, and the ecology of these two elements has become a subject of major importance.
