Subject Volta

The OCV of any circuit consisting only of metals or other electronic conductors that are all at the same temperature and not subjected to external force helds is always zero (Volta s law). In fact, at any interface the Galvani potential is dehned as the chemical potential difference of the electrons (P(j = Ap, (for electrons, Zj = 1). 

The effect of pressure on boiling-point, and the relations between the boiling-points of different liquids at the same pressure, have been the subjects of many researches. Dalton and Volta concluded frpm experiments that all liquids at temperatures which are the same number of degrees above or below the boiling-point at 1 atm. pressure have the same vapour pressure.. 

At the end of this section let us cite the opinion of Sachtler 461), on the subjects in question work function, Volta potential, photoelectrical emission, field emission microscopy, film electroconductivity, magnetic properties of small particles, and IR spectra indicate, according to Sachtler, that the chemisorption bond between the metal and the adsorbate is similar to the bond in the bulk, with both bond strengths differing by not more than 10%. In chemisorption the metal atom partly loses its metallic properties the result is a change of electroconductivity and magnetizing ability. The Me—Me bond is broken and a bond with the adsorbate is formed a mobility of the metal atoms on the surface is the result. All these considerations are consistent with the conclusions from the multiplet theory.

Giulio Milazzo, the father of Bioelectrochemistry, died on January 6 1993 in Rome. He often pointed out that the roots of the subject go back two hundred years to Galvani and Volta, and that he had only resurrected the science. But the Bioelectrochemistry he started was certainly different from the Natural Philosophy of the past, and in many ways quite different from parallel modern developments. 

It seems that certain additional information on this subject could be obtained from analysis and correlation of Volta and zero-charge potentials [155]. It is noteworthy that such an approach resulted in significant achievements in the study of metal-solution interfaces [156-159].
