Pressure Drop. The prediction of pressure drop in fixed beds of adsorbent particles is important. When the pressure loss is too high, cosdy compression may be increased, adsorbent may be fluidized and subject to attrition, or the excessive force may cmsh the particles. As discussed previously, RPSA rehes on pressure drop for separation. Because of the cychc nature of adsorption processes, pressure drop must be calculated for each of the steps of the cycle. The most commonly used pressure drop equations for fixed beds of adsorbent are those of Ergun (143), Leva (144), and Brownell and co-workers (145). The upward flow of gas and Hquid in a pipe is subject to an interesting and potentially important instabiHty. As gas flow increases, Hquid holdup decreases and frictional losses rise. At low gas velocity the decrease in Hquid holdup and gravity head more than compensates for the increase in frictional losses. Thus an increase in gas velocity is accompanied by a decrease in pressure drop along the pipe, a potentially unstable situation if the flows of gas and Hquid are sensitive to the pressure drop in the pipe. Such a situation can arise in a thermosyphon reboiler, which depends on the difference in density between the Hquid and a Hquid—vapor mixture to produce circulation. The instabiHty is manifested as cycHc surging of the Hquid flow entering the boiler and of the vapor flow leaving it. [Pg.98]

Cavitation. The subject of cavitation in pumps is of great importance. When the Hquid static pressure is reduced below its vapor pressure, vaporization takes place. This may happen because (/) the main stream fluid velocity is too high, so that static pressure becomes lower than vapor pressure (2) localized velocity increases and static pressure drops on account of vane curvature effect, especially near the inlets (J) pressure drops across the valve or is reduced by friction in front of the pump or (4) temperature increases, giving a corresponding vapor pressure increase. [Pg.301]

The problem presented to the designer of a gas-absorption unit usually specifies the following quantities (1) gas flow rate (2) gas composition, at least with respect to the component or components to be sorbed (3) operating pressure and allowable pressure drop across the absorber (4) minimum degree of recoverv of one or more solutes and, possibly, (5) the solvent to be employed. Items 3, 4, and 5 may be subject to economic considerations and therefore are sometimes left up to the designer. For determining the number of variables that must be specified in order to fix a unique solution for the design of an absorber one can use the same phase-rule approach described in Sec. 13 for distillation systems. [Pg.1351]

The pressure drop through a settling chamber is small, consisting primarily of entrance and exit losses. Because low gas velocities are used, the chamber is not subject to abrasion and may therefore be used as a precleaner to remove very coarse particles and thus minimize abrasion on subsequent equipment. [Pg.1585]

It is also important to note that the lowest design pressure of any section of the casing must be specified to be no lower than the pressure which it may be subjected to under the PR valve relieving conditions. This is necessary to recognize pressure drop within the casing. The baffle cut determines the fluid velocity between the baffle and the shell wall, and the baffle spacing determines the parallel and cross-flow velocities that affect heat transfer and pressure drop.
