Subject antibacterial activity

The proteins of the outer membrane, many of which traverse the whole structure, are currently the subject of active study. Some of the proteins consist of three subunits, and these units with a central space or pore running through them are known as porrns. They are thought to act as a mechanism of selectivity for the ingress or exclusion of metabolites and antibacterial agents (see Chapter 8). [Pg.8]

Of commercial interest are benzo- and other fused aromatic 1,2,3-diazaborine derivatives which have exhibited good antibacterial activity against a variety of microorganisms (155—157). The reaction of pyrazole or C-substituted pyrazoles with boranes yields the pyrazabole system, a class of exceptionally stable compounds. More than 70 species in this system have been reported and the subject comprehensively reviewed (158). These compounds have been used as ligands in transition-metal complexes (159). [Pg.268]

Harmaline is reported to be an inhibitor of MAO A. MAO A mainly deaminates neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, tyramine, noradrenaiin, and octopamine (Barbeau 1978). The molecule possesses antibacterial activity (Coulthard 1933). Synthetic preparation see (Manske 1927) (Spenser 1959). Harmaline is excreted in the urine of rats as the giucuronide conjugate (Ho 1971). In human subjects the molecule produces numbness of hands and feet (paresthesias) at the onset of the effect. Individuals noted that there was discomfort in the chest, pressure in the head, and dizziness and general malaise which would alternately appear and disappear throughout the session. The dizziness and malaise were associated with certain thoughts or associations (Naranjo 1967). For the test procedure, subjects hands were contaminated with the test organisms. Subjects treated their hands once with a liquid soap product. They washed their hands for 30 seconds and rinsed for 15 seconds. Afterward, hands were sampled three times using the plastic bag sampling procedure. Aliquots of the three sampling solutions were diluted, plated, and incubated. Following incubation, the number of CFUs was enumerated. Antibacterial activity was determined by comparing the number of bacteria removed from the hands after washing once with the test product to the number of bacteria removed from unwashed hands. [Pg.313]

To determine whether the inherent silver and silver coated thread samples would show antimicrobial activity when subjected to soaking wet conditions, the dynamic shake method, ASTM E2149, was performed. The log reduction results after 1 hour and 24 hours incubation at 37 "C (Table 3) show that under soaking wet conditions the inherent silver and silver coated thread samples do exhibit a reduction in bacterial growth. The untreated control samples show an increase in bacterial growth. From these results it would appear the antibacterial activity of inherent silver and silver coated thread samples require soaking wet conditions to exhibit dieir antibacterial properties. As with the AATCC 100 method, the carbonised bamboo sample showed no antimicrobial activity. [Pg.43]
