The phenylation of styrene with phenyl Grignard reagents as a hard carbon nucleophile proceeds in 75% yield in the presence of PdCl2, LiCl, and K2CO3 at room temperature to give stilbene (207). Selection of the solvent is crucial and the best results are obtained in MeCN. The reaction can be made catalytic by the use of CuCl2[197]. Methyllithium reacts with styrene in the presence of Pd(acac)2 or Pd(OAc)2 to give /3-methylstyrene (208) in 90% yield[198]. [Pg.49]

Other polymers used in the PSA industry include synthetic polyisoprenes and polybutadienes, styrene-butadiene rubbers, butadiene-acrylonitrile rubbers, polychloroprenes, and some polyisobutylenes. With the exception of pure polyisobutylenes, these polymer backbones retain some unsaturation, which makes them susceptible to oxidation and UV degradation. The rubbers require compounding with tackifiers and, if desired, plasticizers or oils to make them tacky. To improve performance and to make them more processible, diene-based polymers are typically compounded with additional stabilizers, chemical crosslinkers, and solvents for coating. Emulsion polymerized styrene butadiene rubbers (SBRs) are a common basis for PSA formulation [121]. The tackified SBR PSAs show improved cohesive strength as the Mooney viscosity and percent bound styrene in the rubber increases. The peel performance typically is best with 24—40% bound styrene in the rubber. To increase adhesion to polar surfaces, carboxylated SBRs have been used for PSA formulation. Blends of SBR and natural rubber are commonly used to improve long-term stability of the adhesives. [Pg.510]

Occupational and environmental exposure to chemicals can take place both indoors and outdoors. Occupational exposure is caused by the chemicals that are used and produced indoors in industrial plants, whereas nonoccupa-tional (and occupational nonindustrial) indoor exposure is mainly caused by products. Toluene in printing plants and styrene in the reinforced plastic industry are typical examples of the two types of industrial occupational exposures. Products containing styrene polymers may release the styrene monomer into indoor air in the nonindustrial environment for a long time. Formaldehyde is another typical indoor pollutant. The source of formaldehyde is the resins used in the production process. During accidents, occupational and environmental exposures may occur simultaneously. Because 100% DVB is not available commercially, one has to choose either 56% DVB or 80% DVB for the preparation of GPC/SEC gels. The potential components of commercial divinylbenzene are shown in Fig. 5.5. The composition of commercial 56% DVB consists of 56% DVB isomers and 44% ethylstyr-ene and diethylbenzene isomers. The diethylbenzene is nonreactive, but the ethylstyrene acts as styrene in the formulation and tends to produce softer, more swellable GPC gels. Therefore, it is not necessary to actually add styrene to the formulation to produce a ST-DVB gel. Because 80% DVB has only 20% ethylstyrene and diethylbenzene isomers the GPC/SEC gel produced using it would be more rigid and less swellable. [Pg.166]

A number of studies have recently been devoted to membrane applications [8, 100-102], Yoshikawa and co-workers developed an imprinting technique by casting membranes from a mixture of a Merrifield resin containing a grafted tetrapeptide and of linear co-polymers of acrylonitrile and styrene in the presence of amino acid derivatives as templates [103], The membranes were cast from a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution and the template, usually N-protected d- or 1-tryptophan, removed by washing in more polar nonsolvents for the polymer (Fig. 6-17). Membrane applications using free amino acids revealed that only the imprinted membranes showed detectable permeation. Enantioselective electrodialysis with a maximum selectivity factor of ca. 7 could be reached, although this factor depended inversely on the flux rate [7]. Also, the transport mechanism in imprinted membranes is still poorly understood. [Pg.180]

An example of a biphasic, Ni-catalyzed co-dimerization in ionic liquids with weakly coordinating anions has been described by the author s group in collaboration with Leitner et al. [12]. The hydrovinylation of styrene in the biphasic ionic liq-uid/compressed CO2 system with a chiral Ni-catalyst was investigated. Paine et al. [85] extensively studied the effect of solvent in the dispersion polymerization of styrene in the polar media. In their study, the dispersion polymerization of styrene was carried out by changing the dispersion medium. They used hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) as the stabilizer and its concentration was fixed to 1.5% within a series of -alcohols tried as the dispersion media. The particle size increased from only 2.0 /itm in methanol to about 8.3 /itm in pentanol, and then decreased back to 1 ixm in octadecanol. In contrast to /3-PCPY, ICPY did not initiate copolymerization of MMA with styrene [39] and AN with styrene [40]. This is a free-radical polymerization with short chain lives. The first molecules formed contain nearly 58 mol% styrene when there is only 50% styrene in the monomer mixture. The relative enrichment of styrene in the polymer depletes the concentration in the monomer mixture, and both the polymer and monomer concentrations drift lower as polymerization proceeds. Aryldiazomethane can also be used for iron porphyrin-catalyzed alkene cyclopropanation [55]. For example, the treatment of p-tolyldiazomethane with styrene in the presence of [Fe(TTP)] afforded the corresponding arylcyclopropapane in 79% yield with a high transicis ratio of 14 1 (eq. 1 in Scheme 11). More recently, Carreira reported a [Fe(TPP)Cl]-catalyzed diastereoselective synthesis of trifluoromethyl-substituted cyclopropane in aqueous media [56]. The carbene precursor trifluoromethyl diazomethane is difficult to be handled, generated in situ from trifluoroethyl amine hydrochloride, and reacts with styrene in the presence of [Fe(TPP)Cl] to give the corresponding cyclopropanes in high yields and with excellent diastereoselectivities (Scheme 12). [Pg.125]
