Styracaster

Polyoxygenated marine steroids from the deep water starfish Styracaster caroli. J. Nat. Prod., 57,1361 -73. [Pg.322]

Closely related to these compounds are the carolisterols A-C (331-333), which were isolated from deep-water starfish Styracaster caroli [247]. Carolisterols A-C are characterized by a polyhydroxycholanic acid moiety in which the 24-carboxylic acid function is found as an amide derivative of D-cysteinolic acid. Z)-cysteinolic acid has been found in fish, alga, and other marine organisms [248]. [Pg.872]

A. Steroidal Amines from the Starfish Styracaster caroli... [Pg.248]

Starfish (Styracaster caroli) were collected at a depth of 2000 m between the islands of Thio and Lifou (New Caledonia). Polar (aqueous and acetone) extracts of the starfish yielded three unique polyhydroxylated steroidal amines with an unusual 20-epicholanic skeleton, carolisterols A and B (39-41). The separation was achieved by column chromatography (Sephadex LH-20), droplet counter current chromatography, and reversed-phase HPLC (34). [Pg.248]

Unlike other sulfated sterols of marine origin, the AB and carolisterols (42,43) isolated from Styracaster caroli spp. have not shown any protection against the cytopathic effects of HIV-1 in NCI s primary anti-HIV screen (34). [Pg.258]

The last additions are the carolisterols A - C (179 -181) isolated from the starfish Styracaster caroli collected at a depth of2000 m off New Caledonia. These are a striking new addition to the large number of polyhydroxysteroids isolated from marine sources, being the first bile acid-type polyhydroxy steroids isolated from marine organisms. Asa further singolar characteristic the 24-oic function is found in all compounds as an amide derivative of D-cysteinolic acid (131). [Pg.76]
