The first mycosporine isolated from a cnidarian was mycosporin-Gly, isolated in 1977 from Palythoa tuberculosa, and several other related derivatives were subsequently isolated from Zoantharia. Among the most recent mycosporins discovered are derivatives isolated from Stylophora pistillata (Madreporaria), which are the first examples of sulfated mycosporines (Won, Chalker, and Rideout, 1997).
