Structural Formulas and Isomerism

Which alkanes cannot have structural isomers Why  [Pg.704]

The scene A lab near Brussels, Belgium room temperature 21 °C humidity 60%. A woman in a white lab coat is sitting in a private cubicle in front of a row of glasses each filled with a liquid. The woman rinses out her mouth with pure water and then begins the tasting. Exotic coffees Premium teas No. The woman is tasting water that has had various plastics soaking in it. [Pg.705]

To find the isomeric stmctures for pentane, C5HJ2/ we first write the straight carbon chain and then add the hydrogen atoms. [Pg.706]

The straight-chain structure has the five carbon atoms in a row. [Pg.706]

Next we remove one C atom from the main chain and bond it to the second carbon in the chain. [Pg.706]

Thermal energy is converted to mechanical and electrical energy all over the world. But combustion reactions are not usually of great interest to organic chemists, because carbon dioxide and water are the only chemical products of complete combustion. Aside [Pg.471]

We bum natural gas (a hydrocarbon) in our daily lives. Combustion is the most common reaction for hydrocarbons. [Pg.471]

The three-dimensional character of atoms and molecules is difficult to portray without models or computer-generated drawings. Methane and ethane are shown here in Lewis structure and line structure form  [Pg.471]

Give the molecular formulas for the alkanes with ten and fifteen carbon [Pg.579]

The first ten straight-chain alkanes are shown in Table 19.1. Note that all alkanes can be represented by the general formula C H2 +2, where n represents the number of carbon atoms. For example, nonane, which has nine carbon atoms, is represented by C9H(2x9)+2  [Pg.579]

Show that the alkane with fifteen carbon atoms can be represented in terms of the general formula C H2 +2- [Pg.579]

In this case n = 15. The formula is Ci5H2(i5)+2/ or CisH Self-Check Exercise 19.1.  [Pg.579]

I AIM To learn about structural isomers and how to draw their structural formulas. [Pg.579]

Organic compounds show a widespread occurrence of isomers, which are compounds having the same molecular formula but different structural formulas, and therefore possessing different properties. This phenomenon of isomerism is exemplified by isobutane and -butane [Fig. l-l(a) and (b)]. The number of isomers increases as the number of atoms in the organic molecule increases. [Pg.3]

Problem 20.17 Write the structural formulas and give the names of the isomeric methylpyridines. There are three isomers. [Pg.463]

There are only three isomeric trimethylbenzenes. Write their structural formulas, and name them. [Pg.1099]

PROBLEM 4.1 Write structural formulas, and give the functional class and substitutive names of all the isomeric alkyl chlorides that have the molecular formula C4H9CI. [Pg.127]

Butyl acetate (BYOO-til AS-uh-tate) exists in three isomeric forms. Isomers are two or more forms of a chemical compound with the same molecular formula, but different structural formulas and different chemical and physical properties. Their names and synonyms are as follows n-butyl acetate is known as butyl ester, or butyl ethanoate -butyl acetate is called i-methylpropyl ester and acetic acid -butyl ester and ferf-butyl acetate is known by 1,1,-dimethylethyl ester or acetic acid, ferf-butyl ester. The expanded chemical formulas for the forms are slightly different n-butyl acetate, CH3C00CH2CH2CH2CH3 -butyl acetate, CH3COOCH(CH3)(C2H5) and ferf-butyl acetate, CH3C00C(CH3)3. [Pg.125]
