There are several related species of mushrooms that have hallucinogenic effects. Many are in the psilocybe genus, including Psilocybe aztecorum, P. caerulescans, and P. mexicana (Schultes and Hofman 1980, 1992). Other related species include Stropharia cubensis, Panaeolus sphinctrinus, and P. foenisecii (see table 9.1 and figure 9.3). [Pg.355]

The afternoon following our arrival, at the edge of the pasture, which had been cleared by the Spanish priests who had managed Mission La Chorrera since its establishment in the 1920s, I held and turned over in my hand perfect specimens of the same species of mushroom that I had eaten near Florencia. In the pasture before me were dozens of these mushrooms. After examining several, my brother concurred, pronounced them the same Stropharia cubensis we had found before, one of the largest, strongest, and certainly the... [Pg.39]

I believe that this latter comes close to the mark. The UFO is a reflection of a future event that promises humanity s eventual mastery over time, space, and matter. We, in our clumsy attempt to probe these mysteries, were able to coax nature into throwing out this great, burning scintilla of pure contradiction from the dark retort where she labors over the chemistry of the millennium. That we were able to do this is full of import. It meant to me that we were on the right track the Stropharia cubensis mushroom is a memory bank of galactic history. Alien, but full of promise, it throws open a potential for understanding that will sweep away the petty concerns of earth and history-bound humanity. [Pg.124]

My brother and I concluded that the tmly novel element, the candidate for being the causal agent at La Chorrera, was the mushrooms. It was Stropharia cubensis that stood... [Pg.156]

Magic mushrooms belong to the genus Psilocybe, and include Psilocybe mexicana and hougshagenii, traditionally considered to be most important, and also Stropharia cubensis and Panaeolus sphinctrinus. These contain psilocybine and psilocine which mimic the action of serotonin. The Mazatec shaman, Maria Sabina, described the effects of the mushrooms as follows This is a world beyond ours, a world that is far away, nearby and invisible. And this is where God lives, where the dead live, the spirits and the saints, a world where... [Pg.209]

Dr. David Linder, Harvard mycologist, confirmed another as Panaeolus campanulatus L. var. sphinctinus (Fr.) Bresad. Some time later the third species was identified at Harvard by Dr. Rolf Singer as Stropharia cubensis Earle,ll but he did not disclose his discovery, not even to Schultes, until many years later when it was too late to serve a purpose. [Pg.287]

Jars of Stropharia cubensis yielding up to a crop per week fo-< about two months under optimum conditions (approximately 200 grams of mushrooms, about 20 grams dry weight). [Pg.340]

Freezing is most critical for those mushrooms known to contain psilocin, such as Psilocybe cyanescens or Stropharia cubensis, because they have a short shelf life at room temperature. For ingestion, such powders can be capped, blended into a "smoothie, or drunk with chocolate. A chocolate drink prepared with honey, spices and water (there was no milk in pre-Conquest America aside from corn whey) has long been associated with mushroom rituals and is quite pleasant served before a velada. [Pg.344]

Recently, Bigwood and Beug detected psilocybin in concentrations as large as 13-3 mg./gm. (1.3 percent) and psilocin in concentrations of 1.0 mg./gm. in a batch of dried Stropharia cubensis mushrooms. In the same strain, however, they also found psilocybin as low as 3.2 mg./gm. and psilocin at 1.8 mg./gm. [Pg.346]

In The Marriage of the Sun and Moon, Andy Weil declares that he s a "mycophile and describes three trips he took using the San Isidro mushroom (Stropharia cubensis). These three experiences with the same mushroom stimulated greatly varying responses. They may serve as a conclusion for this discussion, because they emphasize again the significant influence of mental set and setting. [Pg.371]

The main indole alkaloid present in the mushroom Psilocybe mexicana (Agaricaceae). Psilocybin is also present in the mushrooms Stropharia cubensis and Conocybe spp. [Pg.946]

Central to the argument McKenna makes for a role of psilocybe mushrooms are the facts that Stropharia cubensis grows in cow dung and that cattle were the main source of wealth and livelihood in early Neolithic cultures in Asia and Africa. When McKenna came upon the... [Pg.42]

Psilocybe cubensis, or Stropharia cubensis, more commonly knojon as "magic mushrooms."... [Pg.201]

PSILOCYBIN - MAGIC MUSHROOM GROWERS GUIDE. O.T. Oss and O.N. Oeric, 1976. Excellent guide for those who wish to cultivate carpophores of Stropharia Cubensis. Nicely illustrated with black and white and color photographs. [Pg.18]
