Strong, Jerome

In 2005, Jerome and co-workers investigated the selective monoesterification of sucrose with various fatty methyl esters, in the presence of a strongly basic guanidine (triazabicyclo[4.4.0.]dec-5-ene (TBD)) grafted either over silica (HMS-TBD) or a polystyrene support (PS-TBD) (Scheme 12) [129].

As also shown in Fig. 8, for the other compounds the anomalous increase in crh disappears above 20 to 30 kbar, where both p change at similar rates. At these high pressures the behavior of ph(T) is essentially linear in T, as shown in Fig. 9 [66,70] (also, unpublished results of J. R. Cooper, D. Jerome, and E. M. Engler, 1978). Thus the T2 behavior observed at ambient pressure must be linked in some way with the anomalous pressure dependence, and this is entirely consistent with the result for (TSeT)2Cl mentioned above (p , 71 and weak pressure dependence at ambient pressure). One possible reason for such a link could be that the pressure dependence arises from a strong dependence of molecular spacing (a). In such a case it is more appropriate to consider the behavior of ph(T) at constant a. Using the known thermal expansion... 

One or more stable conformations can also be assumed for cyclic peptides which can adopt more or less rigid structures stabilized by hydrogen or other bridges or, strongly, by complexing various metal ions. As an example of many published structures [41], there is the Li-complex of the antitoxic mushroom peptide antamanide (see p. 215), a structure which was determined in 1973 by Isabella L. Karle [42] using the direct method of Jerome Karle (Nobel Prize 1987, shared with J.A. Hauptmann). 

Reactions to Seaborg s proposal varied within the executive office staff. The Budget Bureau viewed it as an attempt to "protect the President (and AEC) in such a way that specific forward-looking actions could be taken at this time without a commitment of public funds now." Kennedy s science adviser, Jerome Wiesner, took a dimmer view of the proposal. Wiesner mentioned it to the president, who initially did "not feel strongly" about it one way or the other. Wiesner indicated that if such a study was to be useful, it should consider the need for atomic power within the broad context of energy supplies from all sources. ...
