Failures occur when some "stress" exceeds the corresponding "susceptibility" in any component. As a concept it makes perfect sense in the context of mechanical engineering. The stress is usually a force, and the susceptibility is the point where the mechanical component can no longer resist that force. An analogous concept has been developed for electronic components (Ref. 3). Tranquillizers and beta-blockers are important potential contaminants in edible tissues, particularly of pigs, where they may be used to counteract the stress susceptibility of some breeds during transport, which results in poor quality meat and even mortality.
