Stress-raising effects

A considerable reduction in stress concentration could be achieved by using a cross-bore which is eUiptical in cross-section, provided the major axis of the eUipse is normal to the axis of the main cylinder. A more practical method of achieving the same effect is to have an offset radial hole whose axis is parallel to a radius but not coincident with it (97,98). Whenever possible the sharp edges at the intersection of the main bore with the cross bore are removed and smooth rounded corners produced so as to reduce the stress raising effects. [Pg.90]

These values are determined by experiment. It is, however, by no means a trivial task to measure the lamina compressive and shear strengths (52,53). Also the failure of the first ply of a laminate does not necessarily coincide with the maximum load that the laminate can sustain. However, it is also recognised that the overall flexibility of the joint is as important as its strength. This is valid if the stress raising effect of the hard point , created by the presence of the leg. Is to be avoided. Susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels to this form of corrosion usually becomes a problem when the caustic concentration exceeds approximately 25% and temperatures are above 100 °C (212 °F). Tests in a Clj + Oj mixture at 427°C have shown that the worst elements for promoting susceptibility are Al, Sn, Cu, V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Ni, while the least harmful are Zr, Ta and Mo. a-phase alloys are generally more susceptible than )3-phase alloys. Heat treatment has not been examined extensively, but some heat treatments render some a-alloys more susceptible or change the mode of fracture. The general effect will depend upon the alloy and the heat-treatment cycle. Subsequent cold work can sometimes considerably lower susceptibility. It may be felt that the initiation of a stress-corrosion test involves no more than bringing the environment into contact with the specimen in which a stress is generated, but the order in which these steps are carried out may influence the results obtained, as may certain other actions at the start of the test. Thus, in outdoor exposure tests the time of the year at which the test is initiated can have a marked effect upon the time to failure as can the orientation of the specimen, i.e. according to whether the tension surface in bend specimens is horizontal upwards or downwards or at some other angle. But even in laboratory tests, the time at which the stress is applied in relation to the time at which the specimen is exposed to the environment may influence results. Figure 8.100 shows the effects of exposure for 3 h at the applied stress before the solution was introduced to the cell, upon the failure of a magnesium alloy immersed in a chromate-chloride solution. Clearly such prior creep extends the lifetime of specimens and raises the threshold stress very considerably and since other metals are known to be strain-rate sensitive in their cracking response, it is likely that the type of result apparent in Fig. 8.100 is more widely applicable. [Pg.1378]
