Strain supply chain

A standardized work flow for strain acquisition, strain purification, primary characterization, and where necessary, classical strain improvement was initiated in our laboratories in 2(X)8 and designated the strain supply chain (SSC). The introduction of these four standardized systematic work processes has resulted in a faster and more resource-efficient development of new strains, both wild-type strains and classically improved strains, for new product development. It is presented here to serve as an inspiration for other groups seeking to systematize their strain-screening activities (Figure 10.1). [Pg.229]

Supply chains that burst to many tier 1 customers/suppliers will strain corporate resources and limit the number of process links the focal company can integrate and closely manage beyond tier 1. In general, managers in companies with immediately wide vertical structures actively manage only a few tier 2 customers or suppliers. Some companies have transferred servicing small customers to distributors, thus moving the small customers farther down in the supply chain from the focal company. This principle, known as functional spin-off, is described in the channels literature (Stem et al. 1996) and can be applied to the focal company s network of suppliers as well as to its customers. [Pg.2118]

In order to represent 3D molecular models it is necessary to supply structure files with 3D information (e.g., pdb, xyz, df, mol, etc.. If structures from a structure editor are used directly, the files do not normally include 3D data. The tetracyclines (Table 3.3) are a group of broad spectrum, orally active antibiotics produced by species of Streptomyces, and several natural and semi-synthetic members are used clinically. They contain a linear tetracyclic skeleton of polyketide origin in which the starter group is malonamyl-CoA (Figure 3.54), i.e. the coenzyme A ester of malonate semi-amide.
