Strain sensitivity

Figure 30.14 shows an interesting aspect of RPA-FT experiments, i.e., the capability to quantify the strain sensitivity of materials through parameter B of ht Equation 30.3. As can be seen, curatives addition strongly modifies this aspect of nonlinear viscoelastic behavior, with furthermore a substantial change in strain history effect. The main advantage of this technique is the rapidity of response and the possibility of performing many bioassays with different algal strains at the same time. The disadvantage is that the kind of response is qualitative. This limitation can be overcome by selecting for liquid inhibition bioassays, the strains that give a positive response in paper disk bioassay (i.e. the strains sensitive to the allechemical(s) tested). 

The strain sensitivity is high, since narrow rocking curves are strongly influenced by small rotations caused by strains in the crystal. 

The high degree of X-ray polarisation in the electron orbit plane provides means of controlling both the signal/noise ratio and the penetration of the X-rays into the specimen. Depending on whether the incidence plane is chosen vertically or horizontally, sigma or pi polarisation may be selected. The strain sensitivity and the extinction distance can thus be varied while the normal photoelectric absorption conditions remain identical.

The overall findings from in vivo germinal cell assays suggest that mercury compounds are clastogenic for mammalian germ cells. However, the apparent differences in species sensitivity and, in some cases, strain sensitivity preclude an extrapolation of the relevance of these findings to humans. The complex mechanical impedance can be obtained by measuring force, velocity, and their phase difference using probes or pickups attached to the transducer at suitable points [144], This method is very convenient with solids [52] (sometimes the most accurate), but not with liquids, although in this case it can be a convenient method of checking the performance of a transducer. The output from an accelerometer or strain-sensitive pickup gives information on resonant frequency and vibrational amplitude.
