Stockholm Conference

It is a pleasure to express my gratitude to the participants in the Stockholm conference for their interest and enthusiasm, and to the authors of the volume, who generously shared their knowledge in an exciting and rapidly developing field of science.

Obviously, decision makers did not remain unconcerned, especially considering traffic emissions. The first regulation came into force by September 1971, a few months before the first earth summit the Stockholm conference. It was the starting point of a long sequence of amendment steps towards more and more stringent emission limit values, also associated with numerous technical standards (monitoring procedures, test cycle profiles, vehicle fleet typology,. ..).

UNEP was established as a result of the Stockholm Conference of 1972 which was the first world-wide attempt to deal with environmental problems (for a general account of UNEP s work see chapter by Shkolenok). It was intended to act as a catalyst for other United Nations activities since other bodies, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, existed already. 

A second relevant event occurred during the 1970 Stockholm conference. This event was the recognition that the detriment of the environment from human activities, widespread poverty, economic growth, etc. was interrelated to the worldwide efforts for achieving economic (quality of life) and social (freedom and opportunity) development. However, this concept of development was missing the important aspect of environment... 

Fewer studies have been carried out on the acidification of groundwaters/ and little is known about the changes that have taken place in groundwater pH during the last ten to twenty years. The recent Stockholm conference on acidification reached a general conclusion that the acidity of shallow groundwaters in Europe has increased.

Meadows published an article in the early 1970s showing how resource limits would affect the global economy if nothing was done to halt the decline. This was discussed at the 1972 Stockholm Conference. Figure 5.5.1 is a schematic of this Doomsday Scenario. ... 

In many respects, the Rio Declaration resembled the Declaration on Human Environment issued by the Stockholm Conference in 1972. The 27 non-binding principles of the Rio Declaration included the polluter pays concept and the precautionary principle. The latter recommends that, before a construction project begins, an impact study should be conducted to identify and forestall potential harm to the environment.
