On the basis of biochemical effects, the two groups of corticosteroids can be readily distinguished  

Mineralocorticoids, which regulate electrolyte balance through Na retention 

Since these two classes of corticosteroids are both important in medicinal chemistry and drug design, they will be discussed separately.
