On the other hand, the pyramids of Mesoamerica were not built to withstand the ravages of time. Rather, the step pyramids rose in tiers, on the top of which a small temple was erected. Unlike the Egyptians, they used irregular stones. 

The first civilized people in this area were the Sumerians, who settled in the southern region of Mesopotamia about 6,000 to 7,000 years ago. The Sumerians had an advanced culture with distinctive arts and urban centers. Around 3500 b.c.e. they became the first people to develop writing and therefore the first to leave historic records. Another of their achievements was the construction of artificial mountains in the form of step pyramids called ziggurats, which they used to observe the sky and worship their gods who lived there.

There were three distinct stages in the building of this pyramid. The first two stages concerned the building of two step pyramids one of seven steps ( ,) the second probably of eight steps (fj) built to cover the first and finally the second step pyramid (jFj) was covered with an outer mantle of which only the lowest part remains. This third phase was to be a true pyramid, the first of its kind. Each of these stages was intended to be a finished structure until a later decision to extend was made. There was never, in fact, a completed tomb because the decision to extend was made each time before the previous stage had been finished. 

In contrast the surface of deposits on the (001) plane were smooth with separate square stepped pyramids (Fig.lc), which are typical for growth on screw dislocation. However square pits appeared on the deposits, if the current density was high enough. Pits were faced by (012) or (013) planes (Fig. Id).
